Cost-effective extension strategies are needed to promote widespreadadoption of agricultural technologies in developing countries. Integratedpest management (IPM) practices, for example, can offer economic, health, and environmental benefits but remain largely underused. This studyevaluates the current IPM dissemination program implemented by theBangladesh Department of Agricultural Extension and uses a linearprogramming model to examine alternative strategies to improve IPM adoption. Results suggest that technology transfer programs may increase their impactby reallocating funding from intensive but costly interpersonalcommunication methods (i.e., farmer field schools) to less intensive methods(i.e., mass media and field days) that reach broader audiences.

Farm households in the Andean region of South America face serious livelihood challenges, including a poor natural resource base and declining agricultural yields. Conservation agriculture has been identified as a potential solution to environmental degradation and the associated poverty and food insecurity in the region. This study analyses the potential economic impact of conservation agriculture in two sub-watersheds in central Ecuador utilizing a linear programming model and data from experiments in farmer fields. The model found that specific cover crops, crop rotations and reduced tillage designed to reduce soil erosion and increase soil organic matter can lead to increased incomes for farm households in a time period of as short as two years. It appears that conservation agriculture practices have the potential to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor in Ecuador because conservation agriculture activities entered the revenue-maximizing model solution for both sub-watersheds.

Probably everyone will agree with Dr. Pearsall's remarks in the April number of this journal as to the necessity for a revision of the North American Geometridæ. The whole group is in a sad state of disorder; the old species are not all well understood and many of the newer ones (Dr. Hulst's and Dr. Strecker's), being unfigured and insufficiently described, are very difficult to identify. It will be some time yet, I fear before anyone will be in a position to attempt a completed monograph, and probably it will be better to take up the work genus by genus, as Dr.Pearsall is doing.

The beetles enumerated below were all taken by myself in the neighbourhood of Victoria, Vancouver Island, during the past few seasons. Some of the larger species, especially the Colosomas, were captured under heaps of rubbish in my garden. The species of Omus and Cychrus and many others were found while searching for land shells under oak logs in the woods. Very many kinds too were found under stones, also during search for shells, while most of the rarer kinds were taken, accidentally I might say, while flying in the sunshine.
The number of specimens of Carabidae that could be collected here is very large, individuals being in fact far more numerous than I have ever seen them anywhere else, and I feel confident that a season's careful working would almost double my present list of species.

In 1874 Dr. Packard described two nearly allied species of Geometrid moths, one a Larentia duodecimlineata, the types being from California, and the other as Larentia perlineata, from New York. There can be no doubt, I think, as to the insect he had before him when describing perlineata. That species seems to be a distinct and easily recognized one, although there is a pretty and not uncommon variety of it which is sometims confused with Euchœca lucata by those who are not very familiar with this group of moths.

A11 the insects mentioned in the following notes were captured by myself during the season of 1882, which was my first year in this island, and were taken for the most part on flowers in the course of my rambles. Some of the Ichneumons, however, were bred from the pupæ of Lepidoptera, and a few species were taken at rest, at light, or in other more or less usual ways.
The eighty species here enumerated have been examined and determined for me by Mr. W. Brodie, of Toronto (to whom I am much indebted for this and other kindnesses), and they are therefore nearly all of them included in the check list issued last year by the Natural History Society of Toronto. In fact, the only names that I do not find in that list are Halictus lœvipennis and Eurra albitarsis, but they may perhaps be there under other names which in my ignorance of synonymy I fail to recognise.

Objective
To investigate the longitudinal relationship between the intake of dietary antioxidants and periodontal disease in community-dwelling older Japanese.
DesignA retrospective cohort study, with a follow-up of 2 years (2003–2005). Intakes of dietary antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, α-carotene and β-carotene) were assessed with a validated FFQ. Participants were classified by tertile of antioxidant intake. Full-mouth periodontal status, measured as the clinical attachment level, was recorded at baseline and follow-up examinations. Periodontal disease progression was considered as loss of attachment of 3 mm or greater over the study period at the interproximal site for each tooth. Finally, the number of teeth with periodontal disease progression per person was calculated and was used as the outcome. Poisson regression analysis was conducted, with dietary antioxidants as the main exposure, to estimate their influence on the number of teeth with periodontal disease progression.
SettingNiigata City (Japan).
SubjectsDentate individuals aged 75 years in 2003, for whom data were available, were included in the analyses (n 264).
ResultsA higher intake of dietary antioxidants was inversely associated with the number of teeth with periodontal disease progression, controlling for other variables. The multivariate-adjusted incidence rate ratios in the first, second and third tertiles were 1·00, 0·76 (95 % CI 0·60, 0·97) and 0·72 (95 % CI 0·56, 0·93) for vitamin C; 1·00, 0·79 (95 % CI 0·62, 0·99) and 0·55 (95 % CI 0·42, 0·72), for vitamin E; and 1·00, 1·02 (95 % CI 0·81, 1·29) and 0·73 (95 % CI 0·56, 0·95) for β-carotene.
ConclusionsThe study results suggest that higher intake of antioxidants may mitigate periodontal disease in community-dwelling older Japanese.

New radiocarbon calibration curves, IntCal04 and Marine04, have been constructed and internationally ratified to replace the terrestrial and marine components of IntCal98. The new calibration data sets extend an additional 2000 yr, from 0–26 cal kyr BP (Before Present, 0 cal BP = AD 1950), and provide much higher resolution, greater precision, and more detailed structure than IntCal98. For the Marine04 curve, dendrochronologically-dated tree-ring samples, converted with a box diffusion model to marine mixed-layer ages, cover the period from 0–10.5 cal kyr BP. Beyond 10.5 cal kyr BP, high-resolution marine data become available from foraminifera in varved sediments and U/Th-dated corals. The marine records are corrected with site-specific 14C reservoir age information to provide a single global marine mixed-layer calibration from 10.5–26.0 cal kyr BP. A substantial enhancement relative to IntCal98 is the introduction of a random walk model, which takes into account the uncertainty in both the calendar age and the 14C age to calculate the underlying calibration curve (Buck and Blackwell, this issue). The marine data sets and calibration curve for marine samples from the surface mixed layer (Marine04) are discussed here. The tree-ring data sets, sources of uncertainty, and regional offsets are presented in detail in a companion paper by Reimer et al. (this issue).
